In the UK, many households are struggling with rising living costs, but there’s good news for those finding it tough to keep up with water bills. Special social tariffs can significantly reduce these bills, but unfortunately, a large number of eligible families aren’t taking advantage of these savings. What Are Social Tariffs?
Social tariffs are reduced water bill rates offered to low-income households or those receiving benefits. Every water company is required to provide these tariffs. They’re designed to ease the financial burden for those who need it most.
Many Are Missing Out
Despite the availability of these tariffs, a staggering number of eligible households are not signed up. According to the Consumer Council for Water (CCW), nearly two million homes, about 15% of those eligible, are not taking advantage of these tariffs. This oversight means they’re missing out on an average saving of £151 per year.
The Rise in Water Bill Reductions
In 2022-23, over 1.3 million households in England and Wales benefited from social tariffs, witnessing a 19% increase from previous years. However, with the average annual water bill sitting at £417 and set to rise to £448 next April, more households need to tap into these savings.
One of the main reasons for this gap is low awareness. Many households simply don’t know that these savings are available to them. Other barriers include the complexity of the application process and varying eligibility criteria.
How Much Can You Save?
On average, households on social tariffs saw their water bills reduced by £151 in 2022-23. However, the level of support and eligibility criteria vary significantly between different water companies.
How to Check Your Eligibility
Every water company in England and Wales has its own social tariff scheme with different eligibility criteria and support levels. For instance:
- Thames Water’s Water Help: Offers a 50% bill reduction for households with an income less than £17,005 (£21,749 in London), excluding disability benefits.
- Yorkshire Water’s WaterSupport: Aims at low-income households with a yearly bill over £350, capping bills at £350.
Don’t Forget About WaterSure
In addition to social tariffs, the WaterSure scheme is another avenue for savings, especially for households using a lot of water due to larger family size or medical needs. This scheme caps water bills at the area’s average, offering an average saving of £307 a year.
With rising costs all around, particularly with energy bills soaring this winter and water bills set to increase from April 2024, it’s vital for eligible households to explore these options.
